On-going Activities in the Ward Neighbourhood Safety Project West Town Sector On January 1, 2006, the Neighbourhood Safety Project was launched by Hamilton Police Services for Division One to work on proactive policing. Division One has been divided into 4 sectors: West Town, South Town, North Town and Downtown. Police beat boundaries have been redrawn to coincide with ward boundaries; West Town covers the same area as Ward 1. Each sector has been divided into neighbourhood beats. In West Town, the beats are Westdale (includes Ainslie Wood), Kirkendall and Strathcona. These beats coincide with the neighbourhood boundaries of the City of Hamilton. Crime Manager A new position, Crime Manager, was created to oversee proactive policing in each sector. The Crime Managers will make sure that information from each sector is shared between all the squads. They will attend community meetings and they will be the first contact for the public. Staff Sergeants will continue to be in charge of reactive policing. Currently, the West Town Crime Manager is A/Sgt Sabrina Feser. She can be reached at sfeser@hamiltonpolice.on.ca or 905-540-5093. Youth/School Officer In addition, a new Youth/School Officer (YSO) position has been created which combines the former positions of Divisional Youth Officer, School Liaison Officer and Community Service Officer. A YSO has been assigned to each sector. The West Town YSO is P.C. Phil Steeves. He can be reached at psteeves@hamiltonpolice.on.ca or 905-546-4918. Business Plans In order to assist with proactive policing, Hamilton Police Services in consultation with community partners have developed business plans for each neighbourhood to set goals for the coming year to improve quality of life issues, such as i) improving communications, ii) reducing graffiti, iii) reducing property crimes etc. This program was piloted in Westdale in 2005 and expanded to Kirkendall and Strathcona in 2006. The 2008 Business Plans should be available shortly. Each plan has the same mission: to work together to solve recurring quality of life issues. Each neighbourhood has their own plan:
