Thanks to the Bay Area Restoration Council (BARC), Trout Unlimited Canada, Hamilton Community Foundation, the City of Hamilton's Public Works Department, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and the many volunteers involved, the Yellow Fish Road™ Program has been re-introduced to Hamilton streets with a splash during National Public Works Week. Today, 80 students from St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School and Mayor Larry Di Ianni, along with Councillor McHattie launched the program by marking the catch basin located on Herkimer Street. The children marked over 85 catch basins and handed out over 500 pieces of information to area homeowners.
The Yellow Fish Road™ program marks storm drains with painted yellow fish and markers with the message “ Only rain down the drain.” Youth volunteers from schools, Guiding and Scouting groups and community organizations mark storm drains in their areas and distribute information to area home owners about Yellow Fish Road™ and proper disposal of household hazardous waste.
