Get a load of this!  Free compost is ready.

Hamilton, ON – May 9, 2005 – The City of Hamilton in partnership with Turkstra Lumber, is celebrating environmental sustainability by offering a free bag of compost this weekend to residents of Hamilton . The free compost give away will take place Saturday, May 14 at Turkstra Lumber's four Hamilton locations.  The event is the City's opportunity to show its appreciation to residents for their participation in the Leaf and Yard Waste Program.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 14 starting at 10:00 a.m. until quantities last. Hamilton residents can pick up one bag per vehicle at Turkstra Lumber locations at 1050 Upper Wellington Street , Hamilton; 355 Mill Street, Dundas ; 370 Green Road , Stoney Creek and 61 Hamilton Street, Waterdown.

In 2004 the City of Hamilton collected and diverted over 17,000 tonnes of Leaf and Yard Waste from the landfill, which was produced into compost. This compost is a nutrient-rich soil enchancer. For best results, mix in equal parts (50/50) with potting soil and add it to your shrubs, flowers, potted plants, or gardens.

The leaf and Yard Waste Program is an important part of our Waste Watch efforts to reach 65% diversion from landfill by 2008.
