  • Strathcona Secondary Plan

A study is being conducted to prepare an updated land use plan and community strategy for the Strathcona Neighbourhood. This area is located north of Main St., south of the CN Rail line, east of Highway 403 and west of Queen St.

The study is currently on hold until the Strathcona Transportation Management Plan is completed.  The Transportation Plan is also on hold until decisions about the location of the east-west Light Rail Transit (LRT) are made.

September 2011 - The Strathcona Secondary Plan is being re-initiated. After being placed on hold  in 2009 pending the progress of for the The Strathcona Transportation Management Study and Rapid Transity Planning, Design and Engineering Study, work on the secondary plan is starting up and community input is important to its overall success.  Look for meetings in October.

  • Neighbourhood Residential Rental Housing Licensing - Wards 1, 8, 10 and 12

Licensing of rental housing has been suggested as a tool to monitor the safety of student housing and to help maintain the ratio of permanent resident/student housing in a community.  More information.

  • Strathcona Transportation Management Plan

As many of you know the Strathcona Master Transportation Plan has been temporarily slowed down as a decision about the location of the east-west Light Rail Transit project has not yet been made, and will influence transportation patterns in the area. We are awaiting the results of the studies and a decision by Metrolinx which should come by this November. This means that the Strathcona Master Transportation Plan should be up and running again by January 2010. The goal of this plan is to address existing transportation issues and transportation management options for the area. We will be looking at driving, cycling, walking, parking and transit conditions and how they can be improved.

Just to remind you the Strathcona Secondary Plan (the master land use planning document for the neighbourhood) was also put on hold, waiting for the Transportation Plan, and this will move ahead in 2010 also.

In the meantime, please visit the project website indicated below which contains all of the community feedback received to date on transportation challenges in Strathcona.

  • Highway 403 Bridge Rehabilitation Project

All three Ward 1 neighbourhoods stand to be affected by Ministry of Transportation's (MTO) Highway 403 Bridge Rehabilitation project.

MTO presentation (May 25, 2009) presents their plans including proposed detours during construction as bridge work continues off and on from June 2010 through Summer 2012. While there is no doubt there will be impacts in Ward 1, I am working with MTO and City staff to mitigate problems. For example, the MTO plans assume that bike lanes on the King Street bridge and on Longwood (the bike lanes will be installed in 2009) will be inoperable during the construction - I don't agree with that approach and believe the bike lanes must stay open. I'm also encouraging MTO to build in a protective structure over the King Street bike lanes/sidewalk to improve the travellers' experience from Strathcona/Kirkendall to Ainslie Wood  Westdale and back, many of you cycle and walk to work and play along that route.
