This Welcome Week, the McMaster Students Union will be putting on a new event in the form of a Community BBQ and Cleanup. Students will form teams, led by residence reps, Society of Off-Campus representatives or Maroons and clean along a designated route through Westdale and surrounding area. We are inviting community members to form teams as well.

Time of Cleanup and Meeting Place: 4 p.m. Meet at Mills Plaza, which is just outside the Mills Library and the Student Centre.

Time and place of BBQ:
About 5 p.m. All of the teams will end up at 1280, the MSU restaurant, for a free BBQ, cooked by the MSU’s Board of Directors.

This event is being done to help improve community relations in the local area, and to involve the area residents in one of our events. Ainslie Wood and Westdale residents are invited to the BBQ, as well as local council and mayoral candidates, in hopes of increasing the profile of the event and of those representing our interests. Additionally, this will get first-year students into the community and work to introduce them to everything the area has to offer!

Rural Routes - exploring Hamilton's farms aboard the HSR

September 11, 2010, Departs at 1:00 tpm and returns at 3:30 pm
Tour of Morden's Organic Farm - pickup point is at Bread & Roses Cafe at the Sky Dragon Centre, 27 King William St., Hamilton

Hamilton Eat Local, Tourism Hamilton, Smart Commute and the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) proudly introduce rural routes – exploring Hamilton’s farms aboard the HSR, a once-a-month farm excursion from June to September.

This summer,
HSR passengers will be going the distance to meet their City’s hardworking farmers; many city folks will discover first-hand that it can be a short distance indeed, from "field-to-fork". The newly developed “Rural Routes” countryside bus tours offers monthly farm excursions.

These tours will provide Hamilton's public transit users with access to some of the area’s most dynamic farms; promote imaginative ways of using the City’s public transit system as a viable means to commute; and get urbanites excited about 'agri-tourism' by showing off the lush and beautiful countryside that surrounds our 'steel' city.

Each month’s Rural Routes tour will offer a unique program developed by the host farm. Each will also offer an on-farm market stand so participants can purchase a variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables, meats, and more before boarding the bus for the return trip to the City.

June 12: Rural Routes will take passengers to ManoRun Organic Farm located in Copetown. ManoRun is well-known for their relationship with the Ancaster Old Mill. Denise Trigatti, farmer at ManoRun, will lead passengers through a herb garden discovery, livestock milking demonstration, and a talk about the joys of growing and eating food that is both local and organic.

July 10: Morden’s Organic Farm and Farm Store located in
Dundas will be the next destination. Morden’s is a co-operative of local farmers who bring their meats, dairy and seasonal fruits and vegetables to this health-food hub. Sandy Morden, owner and operator of Morden’s, will provide a tour of the farm and a visit with the farm animals.

August 21: Rural Routes travels to Puddicombe Estate Farm & Winery of Stoney Creek, where staff will teach visitors the correct way of caring for peaches including canning and freezing techniques.  There will be fresh corn in season available for purchase as well, so don't miss out on this traditional family treat.

September 11: Carluke Orchards in Ancaster welcomes you. One of Hamilton’s best-known apple orchards will offer Rural Routes passengers wagon rides and guided walking tours. They are also well known for their tasty farm-baked apple pies. Tickets will be available at Bread and Roses Café at the SkyDragon Centre (27 King William St.). There may be tickets available on the day of the tour at the pickup point, but seats are limited!

Adult tickets are $5 for each trip; children and seniors tickets are $2 each.

For more information about Rural Routes, please visit Smart Commute Hamilton or call Hamilton Eat Local at 905-549-0900.

We appeal to Hamiltonians to generously help the children and families of Pakistan who are the victims of “the flood of the century” that has affected over 20 million people. UNECCO estimate that nearly 8.6 million children have been affected i.e. 17 times more than the entire population of Hamilton. This is also more than the Tsunami, the Kashmir earthquake and the Haiti earthquake combined.

The children and families in the flood-affected areas need your help. Please give generously to our partner SISO. 100% of the funds raised will go to registered non-profit organizations in Pakistan who are providing food and education to the children and their families.   All donations made between August 2 and September 12, 2010 will be matched by the Canadian government*.

Please join us on September 11 for a photo exhibit and an evening of world music dedicated to the children affected by the flood. If you are unable to attend in person, please support our event by sending your donation to SISO’s Pakistan flood relief effort. Cheque or money order be payable to SISO for Pakistan Flood Relief. Charitable donation tax receipts will be provided for donations over $15. Mail to SISO LIUNA Station, 360 James St. N, Lower Concourse, Hamilton, ON, L8L 1H5

* In order to better respond to the needs of the people of Pakistan and to more effectively match the generosity of Canadians, the Government of Canada will match eligible donations made from August 2 until September 12, 2010. For every donation by Canadians to registered Canadian charities responding to the Pakistan Floods, the Government of Canada will contribute an equivalent amount to the Pakistan Floods Relief Fund. Please note that the Pakistan Floods Relief Fund is separate from the funds raised by charities and will be administered separately by the Government of Canada. (CIDA website)

Celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Crystal Palace at Victoria Park

September 19, 2010, 2 to 5 pm
Victoria Park (at King St. W. and Locke St. N., west of downtown)

Calling all Hamilton history buffs...and anyone who likes a good party!

On September 20, 1860, Hamilton's very own Crystal Palace was opened by Queen Victoria's son Edward. The palace was a beautiful but fragile structure of wood and glass, modelled after London, England's 1851 building of the same name. Hamilton's palace stood for a scant 30 years--but during its day it played host to tens of thousands of area residents. Now it is simply a memory, kept alive through photographs and storytelling...and a big 150th birthday party this September 19.

Join us for music, dancing, games and reminiscences of Victoria Park's beginnings. The event will be emceed by Hamilton historian Bill Manson with readings by Hamilton authors Murray Aikman and John Terpstra. Hear stories about the grand opening of the Provincial Agricultural Fair, an event that attracted not only Prince Edward, but approximately 50,000 others to the park that fall day 150 years ago. Learn about the annual Great Central Fairs, the cannons and army barracks that set up shop on the grounds, the elaborate Confederation Day and Queen's Jubilee celebrations...and find out what the heck a mangel wurtzel is.

Free lemonade, birthday cake and sweet potato fries (the latter courtesy of Rolly Rocket's, currently operating out of the original tavern from the days of the Crystal Palace)!

Come early to browse the vendors and displays and enjoy a picnic on the grass. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.  Victorian costumes encouraged, but not required.

Take transit (HSR stop on King at Strathcona), walk or ride your bike (racks available near the Vic Park community garden). Limited parking is available near the baseball diamond and the municipal lot on King Street, east of Locke.

Event proudly hosted by the Strathcona Community Council and City of Hamilton. Come one...come all!

Note that this event is the result of a motion by Councillor McHattie at the Emergency and Community Services meeting on June 2, 2010.  See the staff report for more details.

Open Streets Celebration

September 26, 2010, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - rain or shine
James Street North from Cannon to Burlington

Open Streets Hamilton is a unique street fair that celebrates physical activity and recreation in our city while introducing people to the businesses and organizations that make our community great.

Based on an amazing tradition born over 35 years ago in Bogota, Columbia, Open Streets now enjoys remarkable success in a variety of North American cities including Winnipeg, Ottawa, New York, Chicago, and Portland.

Open Streets Hamilton will ‘open up’ one of the city’s most exciting streets, James Street North, to Hamiltonians from all walks of life so that we can safely walk, cycle, play and shop in our street. Closing James Street from Cannon to Burlington to vehicular traffic for one day will instantly transform almost 1.5 km of street into a giant urban park. This temporary park will create a space for neighbours to come together to participate in free, fun, family-friendly physical activities, games, art, music, and dance in an expected crowd of approximately 2000 people.

There are many ways to get involved:
1. Participate – gather friends and family and enjoy your community
2. Spread the word – let others know about the event
3. Open your business or provide sponsorship for the event
4. Run a booth – promote your business or organization
5. Volunteer
6. Contact us with your questions and comments:
